Learn More About Troy
Troy Stang is the president and CEO of the Northwest Credit Union Association, the leading trade association representing the financial cooperatives throughout Oregon and Washington. Under his leadership, the Association works steadily to improve the operating environment for credit unions in the Northwest through a focus on advancing credit union policy through advocacy efforts with legislators and policymakers, evolving the state and federal credit union charters, and growing public awareness.
Stang joined the Credit Union Association of Oregon as its president and CEO in 2008. After guiding the organization through its January, 2011 merger with the Washington Credit Union League, Stang served as president of the merged Association and assumed the role of president and CEO in October 2012. Stang has a proven track record of updating the state credit union charter, and during his tenure in the region, legislation allowing credit unions to accept public funds has passed in both Oregon and Washington, and Northwest credit union advocates have played a pivotal role in initiating and advancing credit union legislation at the federal level in Congress.
Stang served from 2003-2006 as a senior advisor to U.S. Department of the Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Snow, during the Bush Presidency administration. He has established a strong body of work in the credit union industry, having previously served as the vice president of the Texas Credit Union League and as a senior vice president for one of the nation’s largest credit unions, where he oversaw strategic growth and development.
Stang began his career as a credit union leader as the charter manager of Central Minnesota Federal Credit Union. He currently serves on a number of important national advisory panels, including the Western CUNA Management School board of trustees, the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) Regulatory Advisory Committee, the ACCUL System Evolution Task Force, and the ACCUL Consumer Awareness Task Force. Stang’s work with ACCUL resulted in the development and launch of the consumer facing website, asmarterchoice.org. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).
Stang holds a master’s degree from The College of St. Scholastica in St. Paul, Minn., a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University in St. Paul, and an associate of applied science degree from St. Cloud Technical College in St. Cloud, Minn. Stang also earned Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE) distinction from the National Credit Union Foundation.
