As hundreds of credit union professionals gathered in her district for the Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) Convention, Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler confirmed her support for the Small Business Lending Enhancement Act to allow credit unions to offer more small-business loans as part of a packed General Session Wednesday morning.
Herrera Beutler is a first-term Republican representing Washington’s 3rd District and is a co-sponsor of the House version of the MBL initiative in the house. The U.S. Senate of the member business lending (MBL) initiative remains due for a floor vote.
“It’s not a Republican issue. It’s not a Democrat issue,” Herrera Beutler told attendees. “It’s not against other financial institutions. It is purely an option for our community, when it comes to small and medium-sized businesses, to get up and run it.”
Her credit union support dates back to at least her time in the Washington State House, when credit union CEOs and volunteers visited and raised her awareness about financial literacy outreach and other community involvement.
That local touch “demonstrates that credit unions aren’t just a business in an area, but they are so much more. They are part of the community,” Herrera Beutler said, adding that both she and her husband are credit union members.
Herrera Beutler ran on the issue of economic turnaround and pointed out that in Southwest Washington, “one in 10 moms and dads are out of work, so it’s not an issue of turf. It’s an issue of making sure there is more economic opportunity for those moms and dads and those individuals to grow an enterprise or a business or an idea, and create more prosperity.”
Herrera Beutler was introduced to attendees by Larry Hoff, CEO of Fibre Federal Credit Union, located in her district.
“Jamie Herrera Beutler isn’t just a friend of credit unions,” Hoff said. “We have enough friends. She is true a champion.”
