Twenty active Northwest credit union chapters bring credit unions together to focus on collaboration, communication, networking, training and community outreach. Four of the most exemplary chapters were recognized with Chapter Excellence Awards Wednesday during the Northwest Credit Union Association's (NWCUA's) 2012 Convention.
Taking home the Leadership Award was the Kitsap County Chapter of Credit Unions for embracing a young school child who’d been accidentally shot. A community comfort dinner raised funds for the girl’s family, and an iPad was presented to help her keep up with schoolwork while she was in the hospital.
“This is an emotional story and one that tells the credit union story of 'People Helping People' so well,” said NWCUA Board Chair Debie Keesee.
The Southwest Chapter of Credit Unions received awards in both the Education and Philosophy in Action categories.
Southwest was honored for a well-established Webinar Education Reimbursement program, which allows credit union professionals to continue high-level training and development. For its ongoing support of Cowlitz and Clark County hunger programs, the chapter also earned the Philosophy in Action award.
Holding up the Advocacy pillar was the Capitol Chapter of Credit Unions in Oregon for having an advocacy focus at nearly all of its meetings in the last year.
The Evergreen Chapter of Credit Unions, meanwhile, earned the Overall Best Pratice Award, having reactivated and reorganized last year after being dormant for six years. The involved credit unions hit the ground running, promoting both the International Year of Cooperatives and the importance innovation at their meetings. The chapter also sees heavy participation in governmental affairs and advocacy initiatives and has 98 active members.
Winning chapters were presented with colorful silk banners that can easily be transported to each of their meetings—an important feature, because chapters generally rotate their meeting locations between communities.
