Immediately following the Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday afternoon, the Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) recognized two credit union volunteers and 51 credit unions in the Northwest for their advocacy efforts over the past year.

Earning Volunteer Advocate of the Year honors from Oregon was Marie Mullins from Northwest Priority Credit Union in Portland, Ore., and Thomas Boucher from North Coast Credit Union in Bellingham took home the honors from the state of Washington.

The Capitol Advocacy Awards, meanwhile, recognize credit unions whose participation in legislative and regulatory activities over the past 12 months has met certain benchmarks. To earn this honor, credit unions with less than $100 million in assets are required to:

  • Complete Project Zip Code;
  • Write letters on credit union-related topics to state or federal legislators;
  • Write comment letters to state or federal regulators; and
  • Attend at least one government affairs forum.

Credit unions with more than $100 million in assets had additional goals of:

  • Meeting with local legislators or members of Congress;
  • Sending staff to their state Government Affairs Conference or Credit Union Day at the Capitol;
  • Participating in a CULAF fundraiser or having staff or the credit union itself contribute to either the state or federal fund; and
  • Attending a CUNA Government Affair Conference or Hike the Hill.
