Sound Credit Union President and CEO Rick Brandsma helped host one of the largest fundraisers to date for Derek Kilmer, Democratic candidate to represent Washington’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Hundreds of attendees joined Brandsma at the gala event held Monday at the Museum of Glass in downtown Tacoma, Wash., where Kilmer received a $5,000 contribution from the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) for the November general election.
The Northwest Credit Union Association (NWCUA) announced its support of Kilmer to replace retiring Rep. Norm Dicks (D) in the House in April. In addition to his current position representing Washington’s 26th Legislative District in the Washington State Senate, Kilmer is the vice president of the Pierce County Economic Development Board.
Earlier this year, at the Washington Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) in Olympia, Kilmer was awarded the NWCUA Anchor Award for his demonstrated and ongoing support of the credit union movement. Kilmer was the prime sponsor of the Association’s prize-linked savings legislation, which passed in May 2011.
Kilmer recently addressed the Washington Governmental Affairs Committee about his campaign and his priorities, indicating an understanding of the powerful role credit unions can play in revitalizing the economy.
Washington's 6th Congressional District encompasses the Olympic Peninsula, most of the Kitsap Peninsula and most of the city of Tacoma. Dicks, a Democrat from Bremerton, has been the 6th District representative since 1977.
