In a joint meeting of the Benton and Linn County Commissioners on Oct. 10, Republican Betsy Close was appointed to the Senate District 8 seat vacated in September by the retirement of Sen. Frank Morse.
Close served four terms in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1999 through 2005, serving as assistant majority leader in both the 2001 and 2003 sessions. She previously taught public school in Albany, Ore., and in the state of Washington.
Close holds bachelor's degrees from both Washington State University and Central Washington University and a master's from Oregon State University. She is married with four grown children.
Oregon's voter registration deadline is rapidly approaching. If you are not registered, have changed your name or address, or wish to change your affiliation, you must register by Oct. 16 in order to vote in November.
Because Oregon is a vote-by-mail state, counties will mail ballots between Oct. 19 and Oct. 23. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Republicans have gained almost 8,000 registered voters in Oregon since the 2010 election, while the Democrats have lost 9,000 voters, resulting in the Democratic voter registration advantage dropping from 9.6 percent in 2010 to 8.6 percent in 2012.
Independents, meanwhile, have grown by more than 70,000 in that same period. That group is composed primarily of non-affiliated voters (NAV), but voters belonging to minor parties, such as the Libertarian or Pacific Green parties, are also included.
