Columbia CU Earns Top SBA Awards
Columbia Credit Union was recognized with two awards at the annual awards dinner sponsored by the regional office of the Small Business Administration (SBA). Columbia earned first place recognition as the Top Credit Union Lender of SBA loans in the Portland-Vancouver region. It was also recognized as the top lender of underserved communities, a competition in which it competed against all banking institutions.

Columbia led all credit unions in both the number of loans and the dollars loaned to members through the partnership with SBA.

“We have had a lot of experience in working with the Small Business Administration lending programs and that experience has helped us maximize benefits of those programs for our members,” said William Fulk, SVP & Chief Lending Officer, who accepted the prize on behalf of the credit union.

Columbia was the only double winner of the night. Robert DuCote, SBA Acting Director noted that Columbia’s work in the underserved market was exemplary pointing out that 100 percent of the credit union loans in the category went to women, veterans or minority owned businesses. This exceeded even the large national banks in the region. “The award-winning lenders provide critical support to hundreds of small business owners and entrepreneurs, doing their part to help stimulate economic growth and job creation,” DuCote said of the award winners.

Storm Finalist for CO-OP THINK Prize
Shari Storm, VP of Verity Credit Union in Seattle, Wash., was one of three finalists for the first annual CO-OP THINK Prize, for her Squirrel smartphone application.

The CO-OP THINK Prize recognizes ideas that propel the credit union movement forward. The three finalists were selected by judges from CO-OP Financial Services and the Filene Research Institute based on four main standards for their ideas—impact, creativity, aggregation (the application of the idea across the industry) and implementation (the ability to be adopted quickly).

Matt Weidler of Evangelical Christian Credit Union won the $10,000 award for his idea for using a mobile phone to access ATMs. Candace Vogelsong, of Community Powered FCU of Newark, Del., was the other finalist.

The three finalists in the inaugural competition presented their ideas to attendees of THINK 11 in Anaheim, Calif.
