Event Description

IRA Essentials – Day One

IRA Essentials give attendees a solid foundation of IRA knowledge. Exercises are included throughout the day to help participants apply information to job-related situations. Attendees will leave this session able to work with IRA owners and process basic IRA transactions with confidence. This is a beginner’s session; no previous IRA knowledge is assumed. Those attending should bring a hand-held calculator.

Course Topics Include:

Introduction to IRAs

  • Explain the benefits of an IRA.
  • Identify the tax differences of a Traditional and Roth IRA.

Establishing an IRA

  • Examine the process for establishing an IRA and the required documents.
  • Differentiate between the types of beneficiaries.

Funding

  • Learn about the Traditional and Roth IRA eligibility requirements.
  • Identify the contribution limit and deadline.
  • Ensure accurate contribution reporting.

IRA Distributions

  • Distinguish the possible taxes on IRA distributions.
  • Identify federal and state tax withholding requirements.
  • Examine IRS penalties and their exceptions.
  • Ensure accurate distribution reporting.

Portability

  • Identify the differences between a rollover and a transfer.
  • Recognize rollovers between IRAs and employer-sponsored retirement plans.
  • Ensure accurate rollover reporting.

Reporting

  • Recognize reporting requirements and outline IRA reporting deadlines.

You should attend this seminar if you:

  • need to learn the basics of Traditional and Roth IRAs,
  • or, want an updated general refresher on IRA rules.

IRA Beyond Essentials – Day Two

Beyond Essentialsbuild on the attendees’ knowledge of IRA basics to address some of the more complex IRA issues their credit unions may handle. This is an advanced session; previous IRA knowledge is assumed and highly recommended. The instructor uses real-world exercises to help participants apply information to job-related situations.

Course Topics May Include:

IRA Benefits

  • Recognize Traditional and Roth IRA tax advantages

IRA Tax Reporting and Withholding

  • List the forms required to complete manual tax reporting corrections.
  • Describe withholding requirements.
  • Analyze tax withholding reporting requirements.

IRA Transactions

  • Identify types of contributions, including rollover and conversion contributions.
  • How to handle a violation of the 60-day or the one-per-12-month rule.
  • Discuss distributions and how assets are removed.
  • Define an excess contribution, a recharacterization, and a reconversion.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

  • Review the required beginning date (RBD).
  • Distinguish between the Uniform Lifetime and the Joint Life Expectancy tables and how to calculate an RMD.
  • Define the RMD restriction, as well as the effect of rolling over or converting an RMD.

Processing an IRA Death Claim

  • Examine the death claim process.
  • Discuss the requirements for an Incoming Beneficiary Account Transfer.

You should attend this seminar if you:

  • are an IRA administrator or member service representative who has a working knowledge of basic IRA operations and wishes to expand your expertise and provide enhanced member service.

About the Presenter

Paul Kern, CIS, CIP, CISP

IRA Training Consultant

Paul Kern is an IRA Training Consultant for Ascensus, Inc.  He is responsible for conducting, collaboratively designing and evaluating IRA training programs to meet the needs of financial organizations nation-wide.  He is an active member of the National Certified IRA Professional (CIP) Examination Board of Directors and CIP Commission.

Before joining Ascensus in 2009, Paul worked for CUNA Mutual Group for 5 years as a training consultant. Prior to 2004, Paul worked in K-12 Education for 10 years.  He taught 1st and 2nd grade for 4 years and was a technology integrator for 6 years.  His primary responsibilities included integrating technology into K-12 curriculum to meet state and federal standards, individual staff technology development plans, technology staff development sessions, and leadership trainings.  During this time he was also an adjunct professor for Edgewood College, Viterbo University, and a requested speaker for the University of Wisconsin-Madison Educational Technology Department.

Paul holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology from Winona State University and a Master of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.  He is a member of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), has earned the designation of Certified IRA Specialist (CIS) through Ascensus, Certified IRA Professional (CIP) through Ascensus and the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU), as well as the designation of Certified IRA Services Professional (CISP) through the American Bankers Association (ABA).
