Leadership Symposium

Date: Jun 21, 2012 • 03:00 AM - 08:30 AM

Location: Portland Airport Sheraton Hotel

Price: No Cost

What’s a Leadership Symposium?

Two of the Northwest Credit Union Association’s top strategic objectives include: working to improve and evolve the charter and lessen the regulatory burden on credit unions, and fostering unity among credit unions throughout the Northwest. The Leadership Symposium is a trio of meetings creating:

  • An opportunity to Interact with government officials such as top regulators and legislative leadership;
  • An environment designed to foster communication between the Association and members; and
  • Perhaps most importantly, an forum for networking and idea exchange between credit unions

Who should attend?

The Leadership Symposium is open to all Oregon and Washington CEOs. CEOs may also invite an additional staff or board member to attend at their discretion. From time to time topics may be of interest to more than one staff member at your credit union, and exceptions to this general rule will be delightfully granted if additional staff members will benefit from, round-out, and add to the discussion anticipated at the Symposium.

Agenda:

10:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Welcome and Overview of the Day
John Annaloro, CEO, NWCUA

10:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.

Marketing Research Overview
Lynn Heider, VP of Public Relations and Communications, NWCUA

The NWCUA commissioned research expert Dr. Neil Goldman to conduct multi market consumer research in Oregon and Washington about what drives credit union membership growth and what then turns members into promoters. This first-of-its kind survey in our region could ultimately lead to the “Got Milk” campaign for credit unions. Lynn will give you a little taste of the results and what surprises we learned that all association members should know about their regional financial services consumers.

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Dialogue with the Regional NCUA Director
Elizabeth Whitehead, Director of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) in Region 5

Join this open discussion forum with Liz Whitehead to ask the questions on the top of your mind and address some of the latest happenings in the regulatory environment.

12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Networking Lunch

12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Partisan Politics, Credit Unions & Member Political Involvement
Dennis Pierce, CEO, CommunityAmerica CU

Surveys show that a large majority of credit union members want to hear from their credit unions concerning political issues—presumably as a trusted source of information on candidates. Credit unions have traditionally abstained from involvement in partisan politics whether because of party differences on the credit union’s board of directors, or because of an expected backlash from members upset over the use of credit union funds on political issues. However, partisan politics become a logical next step as credit unions become more politically active and looks for ways of effectively exerting the influence necessary to overcome big bank lobbyists and their inevitable financing. Missouri’s CommunityAmerica Credit Union CEO Dennis Pierce has taken the seemingly forbidden step into partisan politics at his credit union and will be joining the June Leadership Symposium to share what his credit union has learned.

1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Building the Credit Union of the Future
John Lass, SVP Strategy and Business Development, CUNA Mutual Group

Building upon the sustainable growth framework, John Lass will lead us on a deeper dive examination of the key revenue and expense challenges and opportunities facing credit unions today, with a particular focus on changes in consumer channel preferences, demographics, economic events, competition and regulation. We will also examine real-time case studies to learn how competitors are using different strategies and value propositions to re-shape retail financial services of the future.
